No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Calumba and Diazepam in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Calumba and Diazepam

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Diazepam and Calumba in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Calumba safety at a glance

Calumba overall Use caution Little modern safety data exists, so use it cautiously and ideally under professional guidance.
Pregnancy Avoid Safety is unknown, so it is best avoided during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding Avoid There is not enough information to consider it safe while breastfeeding.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Diazepam

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Diazepam is filed under 12 classifications — including benzodiazepines, anticonvulsants, cytochrome p450 2c19 (cyp2c19) substrates. Calumba has documented interactions with 3 drug classes — the most serious being antacids (minor), h2-blockers (minor) and proton pump inhibitors (ppis) (minor) — and none of Diazepam’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What Calumba Itself Has Been Linked To

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Diazepam. It is the side-effect record for Calumba on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. If something new turns up after you add Calumba, this list is the first place to look.

“Orally, large doses of calumba may cause vomiting and epigastric pain (18).”

Everything above comes from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record for Calumba — expand a row for the licensed statement it rests on. We read the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Diazepam’s FDA label too, and the two lists don’t meaningfully overlap — which is why no Diazepam column appears here.

About Calumba

What is Calumba?

  • Poor appetite
  • Digestive upset and indigestion
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • As a bitter tonic

Calumba is the dried root of an African climbing plant that has long been used as a bitter tonic to stimulate appetite and ease digestive complaints. Modern scientific evidence for these uses is very limited, and its safety has not been well studied, so it should be used cautiously and avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Jateorhiza palmata · Menispermaceae · Dried root · Dried root, powder, tincture, liquid extract, capsules

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Calumba is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Calumba record says about it on its own.

Calumba: dosing

There is no well-established standardized dose for Calumba. Traditional sources used the dried root, powder, tinctures, or liquid extracts, but reliable modern dosing guidelines do not exist. If you choose to use a Calumba product, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed them.

About Diazepam

What Is Diazepam Used For?

Brand names: Valium, Valium injection, Diastat AcuDial, Valtoco

Diazepam treats several different problems, depending on the product. Oral diazepam (tablets such as Valium, and oral solution) is used for anxiety disorders, short-term relief of anxiety symptoms, and symptom relief in acute alcohol withdrawal. It is also used alongside other treatments for muscle spasm and, adjunctively, for convulsive disorders (seizure disorders).

Diazepam injection is used for the same anxiety and alcohol withdrawal uses. It is also used before endoscopic procedures, before surgery, and before cardioversion (when given intravenously). It helps with muscle spasm and tetanus, and with status epilepticus (a prolonged, dangerous seizure) as an add-on. Diazepam rectal gel and Valtoco nasal spray are used only for seizure clusters (acute repetitive seizures) in people with epilepsy ages 2 and older.
