Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Ceritinib
Ceritinib falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Cassia Cinnamon interacts with.
There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of cassia cinnamon for an extended duration might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, which can cause hepatotoxicity in animal models. In humans, very high doses of coumarin from 50-7000 mg/day can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the concern with this pairing. Ceritinib (Zykadia) is already known to be tough on the liver, and your care team will likely be checking your liver enzymes with blood tests during treatment. Cassia cinnamon naturally contains coumarin, and in large supplement-sized doses taken regularly, that coumarin can also stress the liver. So the worry is an additive burden on the same organ, not a change in how your cancer medicine works.
To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how these things work, not a proven event. The cinnamon you sprinkle on oatmeal or toast is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated, high-dose cinnamon capsules taken daily are the real question. Since liver health is so important on ceritinib, please run any cinnamon supplement past your oncologist or pharmacist first.

About Cassia Cinnamon
What is Cassia Cinnamon?
- Blood sugar support
- Digestive upset
- Antioxidant support
- Flavoring and culinary use
- Antimicrobial
Cassia cinnamon is the common, inexpensive cinnamon used in cooking, and it is also taken as a supplement, most often for blood sugar support. The evidence for its health benefits is mixed and far from proven, and because cassia is naturally high in coumarin, taking large amounts regularly may stress the liver. Use food amounts freely, but talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using high-dose supplements.
About Ceritinib
What Is Ceritinib Used For?
Brand name: Zykadia
Zykadia (ceritinib) is used to treat adults with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) — meaning lung cancer that has spread — when the tumor tests positive for a gene abnormality called ALK (anaplastic lymphoma kinase). An FDA-approved test must confirm ALK positivity before starting treatment.
