Here's the short version: this is a theoretical concern, not something proven in people. Tocilizumab (Actemra) is an injectable biologic that calms an overactive immune system to ease conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. Catechu isn't broken down by the same pathways as a biologic, so it won't speed up or slow down how your body clears the drug. The worry is different. Lab and animal studies hint that catechu may nudge the immune system on its own.

If catechu pushes your immune activity in an unexpected direction, it could, in theory, blunt or complicate how well tocilizumab controls your symptoms. We really don't know the size of this effect in humans. Please run it by your pharmacist or rheumatologist before adding catechu, rather than stopping anything on your own.

Catechu is an astringent extract made from the heartwood of the Acacia (Senegalia) catechu tree, used traditionally for mouth sores, sore throat, diarrhea, and minor skin problems. Strong human evidence is lacking for most uses, so it should be viewed as a traditional remedy rather than a proven treatment. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medicines.

What Is Tocilizumab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Actemra

Tocilizumab injection is used to treat several serious inflammatory and immune-related conditions. Actemra (tocilizumab) is indicated for moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis in adults who haven't responded well to other disease-modifying drugs, giant cell arteritis in adults, systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD) to slow lung function decline, polyarticular and systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis in patients 2 years and older, and severe or life-threatening cytokine release syndrome (CRS) caused by CAR T-cell therapy in adults and children 2 and older.

Actemra is also approved for hospitalized adults and children aged 2 and older with COVID-19 who are on corticosteroids and need supplemental oxygen or mechanical breathing support. Not every brand or route is approved for every use — your prescriber will choose the right form for your specific condition.
