Here's the concern with pairing chaparral and nevirapine (Viramune). This isn't about one changing the other's blood levels. Instead, it's about your liver. Nevirapine is already one of the HIV medicines most likely to stress the liver, and it carries an FDA boxed warning about serious, sometimes life-threatening liver injury. Chaparral has been independently tied to severe liver damage too. Stacking two liver-stressing substances could add up and raise your risk.

To be fair, this specific combination is theoretical and based only on weak, anecdotal evidence. Still, given nevirapine's known liver risks, I'd steer clear of chaparral. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and please talk with your doctor or pharmacist before adding it.

About Nevirapine

What Is Nevirapine Used For?

Brand names: Viramune, Viramune XR

Nevirapine is used alongside other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection. It is not a cure, but it helps suppress the virus when used as part of a combination regimen.

The immediate-release tablet is approved for adults and pediatric patients 15 days and older. The extended-release tablet is approved for adults and for pediatric patients 6 years of age or older who meet a minimum body surface area requirement. The oral suspension is approved for adults and pediatric patients 15 days and older. None of these formulations should be used alone to treat HIV-1, and none are approved for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).
