Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the concern with pairing chaparral and nitrofurantoin (Macrobid, Macrodantin). Both can be tough on the liver. Chaparral has been tied to serious, sometimes lasting liver damage, and nitrofurantoin, while usually well tolerated for a short UTI course, can occasionally irritate the liver too. Stacking two things that stress the same organ may add up.

To be honest, this is a theoretical, anecdotal caution rather than something proven, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, with chaparral's known safety record, I'd steer clear of it altogether. Watch for warning signs like yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nitrofurantoin page

“Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid, Macrodantin) treats urinary tract infections and can strain the liver on its own, which is why this interaction list deserves genuine care rather than a glance. Of the 82 ingredients on file, 38 can add their own liver stress on top of the drug's, and three of the four major-rated entries fall in that group, i…”

About Chaparral

What is Chaparral?

Chaparral
  • Pain and inflammation
  • Skin conditions
  • Antioxidant/general wellness
  • Infections
  • Traditional 'detox' remedies

Chaparral is a desert shrub long used in traditional medicine, but there is no reliable proof it treats any condition. It has been linked to serious and sometimes irreversible liver and kidney damage, and the FDA has warned against using it. Because of these safety concerns, we recommend avoiding chaparral.
