Chaparral + Verapamil
Verapamil brand names: Isoptin SR, Verelan, Isoptin, Calan SR, Verelan SR, and others.
Chaparral has a moderate interaction with Verapamil. Theoretically, chaparral might have additive adverse effects on the liver when used with hepatotoxic drugs.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Verapamil
Verapamil falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Chaparral interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: this isn't about chaparral changing how strong your verapamil is. It's about your liver. Chaparral has been tied to serious, sometimes lasting liver damage, and verapamil is also processed by the liver and can occasionally stress it. The concern is that stacking two things that can be hard on the liver could add up. To be clear, this is a theoretical worry based mostly on case reports, not solid studies, so I don't want to scare you.
Honestly, my bigger flag is chaparral itself. Because of real reports of liver and kidney harm, the FDA has warned against using it, so I'd steer clear regardless. If you ever feel unusual tiredness, belly pain, yellowing skin or eyes, or dark urine, contact your doctor right away. Please loop in your pharmacist or physician before combining these.

These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers Chaparral or Verapamil, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Verapamil page
“This is one of the longer interaction lists we publish, and with verapamil (Calan, Verelan) it warrants genuine care, starting with the ten major-rated entries. Verapamil lowers blood pressure and slows the heart, so most of the 295 ingredients on file either push that effect further than intended or change how much of the drug reaches…”

About Chaparral
What is Chaparral?
- Pain and inflammation
- Skin conditions
- Antioxidant/general wellness
- Infections
- Traditional 'detox' remedies
Chaparral is a desert shrub long used in traditional medicine, but there is no reliable proof it treats any condition. It has been linked to serious and sometimes irreversible liver and kidney damage, and the FDA has warned against using it. Because of these safety concerns, we recommend avoiding chaparral.

Verapamil Is Linked to Lower Levels of 2 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Verapamil as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Chaparral — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
