Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: rifampin can be tough on your liver all on its own. One of the things doctors watch for during TB treatment is rising liver enzymes or signs of liver irritation. Chaparral has its own reputation for causing liver harm, sometimes serious and lasting, which is why the FDA has warned people away from it.

Put the two together and the worry is simply additive stress on the liver. This isn't about chaparral changing how rifampin works, it's about two liver-stressing things stacking up. Watch for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, nausea, or unusual tiredness. To be honest, this concern is theoretical and based on weak, anecdotal reports, but given chaparral's track record, I'd skip it and check with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Chaparral

What is Chaparral?

Chaparral
  • Pain and inflammation
  • Skin conditions
  • Antioxidant/general wellness
  • Infections
  • Traditional 'detox' remedies

Chaparral is a desert shrub long used in traditional medicine, but there is no reliable proof it treats any condition. It has been linked to serious and sometimes irreversible liver and kidney damage, and the FDA has warned against using it. Because of these safety concerns, we recommend avoiding chaparral.

About Rifampin

What Is Rifampin Used For?

Brand names: Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifadin Injection, Rofactor

Rifampin treats all forms of tuberculosis. It is always used as part of a combination of TB medicines, not on its own.

It also treats asymptomatic meningococcal carriers. These are people who carry the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis in the nose and throat without being sick. Rifampin is not used to treat an actual meningococcal infection.

Rifampin capsules are taken by mouth. Rifadin IV and Rifampin for Injection are given through a vein for the initial treatment and retreatment of tuberculosis when the medicine cannot be taken by mouth.
