Chokeberry and Zopiclone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Zopiclone

Zopiclone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Chokeberry interacts with.

Theoretically, chokeberry might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that chokeberry inhibits CYP3A4. In humans, there is one case report of a drug interaction with trabectedin, a CYP3A4 substrate, which is hypothesized to have been caused by chokeberry inhibition of CYP3A4.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for zopiclone, your sleep medication. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break it down and clear it out. Lab studies suggest chokeberry may slow that enzyme a bit. If it does, zopiclone could linger longer than usual, which might mean stronger or longer-lasting effects like next-morning grogginess, drowsiness, dizziness, or that bitter metallic taste feeling more pronounced.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is mostly theoretical, drawn from test-tube work and a single case report with a different drug, so it's far from proven. Enjoying chokeberry as juice or jam is unlikely to cause trouble. Before starting a concentrated chokeberry supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Zopiclone page

“Zopiclone is a prescription sleep aid, which makes this one of the pages I read with real concern, because the most dangerous combinations add sedation of their own. Nearly 80 of these ingredients depress the nervous system, and stacked on a sleeping pill they can bring heavy drowsiness or, at worst, slowed breathing.”

About Chokeberry

What is Chokeberry?

Chokeberry
  • Antioxidant support
  • Heart and blood vessel health
  • Blood pressure support
  • Blood sugar support
  • Common cold symptoms
  • Anti-inflammatory support

Chokeberry (aronia) is a dark berry rich in antioxidants called polyphenols, and it's widely eaten as juice, jam, and supplements. Early research hints it may support heart health, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is still limited and far from proven. It's generally well tolerated as a food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
