Chokeberry + Clindamycin
Clindamycin brand names: Cleocin, Dalacin C, Cleocin T Gel, Clindesse, ClindaMax.
Chokeberry has a moderate interaction with Clindamycin. Theoretically, chokeberry might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Clindamycin
Clindamycin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Chokeberry interacts with.
In vitro research shows that chokeberry inhibits CYP3A4. In humans, there is one case report of a drug interaction with trabectedin, a CYP3A4 substrate, which is hypothesized to have been caused by chokeberry inhibition of CYP3A4.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the basics: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down clindamycin, and lab studies suggest chokeberry may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in your body, clindamycin could clear a little more slowly and build up, which in theory might bump up its usual side effects like nausea, stomach upset, or diarrhea.
That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is mostly test-tube data plus a single case report with a different drug, so the real-world risk with clindamycin looks low. Eating chokeberry as juice or jam is unlikely to matter much. Concentrated supplements are a bigger question mark, so it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.
- CConsensus.
- DAnecdotal evidence.

These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers Chokeberry or Clindamycin, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Clindamycin page
“Someone on clindamycin (Cleocin) is usually mid-course against a stubborn bacterial infection, and often reaching for a probiotic to protect the gut at the same time. That instinct is understandable, but this list warrants genuine care.”

About Chokeberry
What is Chokeberry?
- Antioxidant support
- Heart and blood vessel health
- Blood pressure support
- Blood sugar support
- Common cold symptoms
- Anti-inflammatory support
Chokeberry (aronia) is a dark berry rich in antioxidants called polyphenols, and it's widely eaten as juice, jam, and supplements. Early research hints it may support heart health, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is still limited and far from proven. It's generally well tolerated as a food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
About Clindamycin
What Is Clindamycin Used For?
Brand names: Cleocin, Dalacin C, Cleocin T Gel, Clindesse, ClindaMax
Clindamycin treats serious infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria. It also treats serious infections from susceptible strains of streptococci, pneumococci and staphylococci. It is generally reserved for people allergic to penicillin, or when a penicillin is not appropriate.
Some product labels list specific infection types: lower respiratory tract, skin and skin structure, gynecological, intra-abdominal, bone and joint infections, and septicemia (bloodstream infection). Clindamycin phosphate vaginal cream 2% is used for bacterial vaginosis. Clindamycin should not be used for meningitis.

Clindamycin Is Linked to Lower Levels of 7 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Clindamycin as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Chokeberry — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
