The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Dash Diet and Naloxone in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Dash Diet and Naloxone

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Naloxone and Dash Diet in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — research on Dash Diet alongside specific medications may be limited.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Dash Diet at all — not against Naloxone, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

Dash Diet is an eating pattern rather than something you take. Ask your pharmacist or doctor before changing how you eat while on a prescribed medicine: some medicines are dosed around meals, and a change in diet can change how they work. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

What Naloxone’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves Dash Diet. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Naloxone’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you follow Dash Diet and take the medicine. 7 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Dependence or withdrawal symptoms Worth acting on
  • Hallucinations Worth acting on
  • An irregular heartbeat Worth acting on
  • Seizures Worth acting on
  • Low mood Worth acting on
  • Raised blood pressure Worth acting on
  • Shortness of breath Worth acting on

Special populations

Dash Diet in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy Possibly Safe

When used appropriately, short-term. DASH diets have been used with apparent safety during pregnancy for 4-12 weeks. A modified DASH diet called MAMA-DASH, with adequate nutrition and calories for pregnancy, has been used for 20 weeks without reports of adverse events.

Lactation Possibly Safe

When used appropriately while breastfeeding for up to 6 months. The DASH diet is a balanced diet that is not expected to be harmful during breastfeeding. Observational research in exclusively breastfed infants has found that high adherence to the DASH diet for 4-6 months while breastfeeding is not associated with changes in infant weight, height, or head circumference when compared with low adherence to the DASH diet.

Overlapping uses

What Naloxone Is Prescribed For, and What Dash Diet Has Been Studied For

These two come up together because they touch the same health topic — not because they do the same job. Naloxone is a prescription medicine with approved uses on its FDA label. Dash Diet is an eating pattern: what follows is what researchers have looked at it for, and how strong that evidence is.

Naloxone is prescribed for: Naloxone Hydrochloride injection is used for the emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose — reversing dangerous slowing of breathing and loss of consciousness caused by opioids. It is also approved for use in pediatric patients of all ages. Naloxone Hydrochloride injection is additionally indicated specifically for military personnel and chemical incident responders: for emergency treatment of patients 12 and older where high-potency opioids such as fentanyl analogues have been used as a chemical weapon, and for temporary protection against breathing and nervous system depression when entering an area contaminated with such opioids. Zimhi (naloxone HCl) is a pre-filled, single-dose injectable product approved for intramuscular or subcutaneous use in known or suspected opioid overdose.

Dash Diet has been studied for:

  • Depression studied, not established Dash Diet has been studied for this. Natural Medicines rates the evidence: Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate Read what the research shows

    Dash Diet for depression

Observational research has found that following the DASH diet seems to be associated with a reduced risk of depression.

Effectiveness ratings and the research summaries above are the verbatim record from the Natural Medicines database, which grades evidence from “Effective” down to “Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate”. A rating below the top of that scale means researchers have looked at it — not that it works, and never that it can stand in for a prescribed medicine. Do not stop or replace Naloxone on your own; if you are taking Dash Diet for the same health topic, tell your prescriber, especially if the medicine is being adjusted to a target.

Everything else you take

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Naloxone

This page covers Dash Diet only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Naloxone page lists 3 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: 1,4-butanediol (moderate), Gamma Butyrolactone (gbl) (moderate) and Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (ghb) (moderate).

By severity: 3 moderate.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Naloxone page

“The list of supplements that interact with naloxone, the emergency spray or injection (Narcan, Zimhi, Rivive) that reverses opioid overdoses, is short and unusual. All three entries are forms of the same substance: gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) and two chemicals the body converts into it, GBL and 1,4-butanediol.”

About Dash Diet

What is Dash Diet?

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart health
  • Lowering cholesterol
  • Weight management
  • Healthy eating pattern

The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet is an eating plan rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy, with less salt, red meat, and added sugar. It is one of the best-studied diets for lowering blood pressure and is widely recommended by doctors and dietitians. It is a food-based lifestyle plan, not a pill or supplement.

Eating pattern (whole-food diet plan)

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Dash Diet is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Dash Diet record says about it on its own.

Dash Diet: dosing

There is no pill or standardized "dose" for DASH, since it is an eating pattern rather than a supplement. Instead, the plan suggests target servings each day from food groups like vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy, lean protein, and a limited amount of fats and sweets.Sodium goals are usually set at a moderate level, and there is a lower-sodium version that may lower blood pressure even more. The exact amounts depend on your calorie needs, age, and health goals.A registered dietitian or your pharmacist can help you tailor the plan to your needs. Free DASH guides are also available from the NIH and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
