Amifampridine falls under CHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Dimethylsulfoxide (dmso) interacts with.
In vitro and animal research suggests that DMSO inhibits acetylcholinesterase activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the idea behind this pairing. Amifampridine (Ruzurgi) works by boosting nerve signals to your muscles, which is why it's used for Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome. DMSO, in lab and animal studies, appears to block acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme that normally clears the nerve signal chemical (acetylcholine). If you stack both, you could in theory get too much nerve stimulation, meaning more cholinergic side effects like nausea, stomach cramps, diarrhea, extra saliva or sweating, and a faster or irregular heartbeat.
I want to be honest with you though: this is a theoretical concern based only on test-tube and animal data, not real cases in people. Still, since amifampridine itself can lower the seizure threshold, I'd run any DMSO use by your neurologist or pharmacist first.
