Benzocaine, Dextromethorphan falls under TOPICAL DRUGS — the group Dimethylsulfoxide (dmso) interacts with.

Topical DMSO might increase the effects and adverse effects of topical drugs.
Evidence from animal studies and limited human studies suggests that DMSO may potentiate the action of numerous topical medications by increasing their absorption through the skin. This increase in absorption seems to depend on the concentration of DMSO and the molecular weight of the medication.

Here's the thing to keep in mind with this combo. DMSO is a known 'penetration enhancer,' meaning it can drive other substances through your skin faster and in larger amounts. If you apply it near or over a spot where you've used a benzocaine product (like a numbing gel or cream), you could push more of that benzocaine into your body than intended.

With benzocaine specifically, the main worry from too much absorption is a rare but serious blood problem called methemoglobinemia, which can cause bluish lips or skin, headache, and shortness of breath. The dextromethorphan piece is usually taken by mouth, so DMSO on the skin matters much less there. This is based on limited human and animal data, but I'd play it safe and check with your pharmacist before combining them.
