Evidence from animal studies and limited human studies suggests that DMSO may potentiate the action of numerous topical medications by increasing their absorption through the skin. This increase in absorption seems to depend on the concentration of DMSO and the molecular weight of the medication.

Here's the gist with DMSO and brimonidine (Alphagan): DMSO is known for one tricky talent, it helps other substances slip through the skin more easily. So if DMSO came into contact with topical brimonidine, in theory it could push more of the drug into your body than expected, boosting both its effects and its side effects.

For brimonidine, more absorption could mean things like sleepiness, dizziness, low blood pressure, a slower heartbeat, or dry mouth. Keep in mind brimonidine is usually an eye drop, so this scenario is uncommon, and the evidence here is mostly from animal and limited human studies. Still, never put DMSO near your eyes, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
