Dimethylsulfoxide (dmso) and Oxaliplatin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

PLATINUM AGENTS

Why this applies to Oxaliplatin

Oxaliplatin falls under PLATINUM AGENTS — the group Dimethylsulfoxide (dmso) interacts with.

Theoretically, using DMSO as a solvent for platinum-based chemotherapeutic agents may reduce chemotherapeutic effects.
In vitro research shows that DMSO reduces the cytotoxicity of cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin by inducing ligand displacement.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for oxaliplatin (Eloxatin): this is a platinum-based chemo drug, and the platinum atom is what actually attacks the cancer cells. In lab dish studies, DMSO chemically reacts with platinum drugs and can bump that active platinum off, which weakened how well drugs like oxaliplatin, cisplatin, and carboplatin killed cancer cells. So the worry is less cancer-fighting power, not more side effects.

Now, the honest part: this finding comes from test-tube research, not from people, so it's a theoretical concern. Still, with a treatment this important, you don't want to take any chances. Please don't put DMSO anywhere near your chemo, and check with your oncology team or pharmacist before using any DMSO product while you're on oxaliplatin.

  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Oxaliplatin page

“Most of the ten supplements on record for oxaliplatin (Eloxatin), a chemotherapy used against colorectal cancer, are antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and coenzyme Q10, and the concern with each is the same, that they might in theory blunt the drug's ability to kill tumor cells. None of the ten is rated major, eight sit at mod…”

About Dimethylsulfoxide (dmso)

What is Dimethylsulfoxide (dmso)?

Dimethylsulfoxide (dmso)
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Arthritis
  • Sprains and strains
  • Interstitial cystitis (bladder pain)
  • Skin penetration enhancer for other medicines

DMSO is a colorless liquid solvent that people apply to the skin for pain and inflammation, and it is FDA-approved (as a prescription) only for interstitial cystitis placed directly into the bladder. Most over-the-counter uses for pain and arthritis have limited or low-quality evidence, and DMSO can carry impurities or push other chemicals through your skin. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid industrial-grade products.

About Oxaliplatin Injection

What Is Oxaliplatin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Eloxatin

Oxaliplatin Injection is used in combination with two other drugs — fluorouracil and leucovorin — to treat colon and colorectal cancers. It is approved for adjuvant treatment (treatment after surgery to lower the chance of cancer returning) of stage III colon cancer in patients who have had the tumor completely removed.

It is also used to treat advanced colorectal cancer (cancer that has spread or cannot be cured with surgery alone). In both settings, oxaliplatin is always given as part of a combination regimen — it is not used alone.
