Dulse and Fosfomycin

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Fosfomycin and Dulse in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Dulse safety at a glance

Dulse overall Use caution Generally safe as a food, but supplements may contain high iodine and potassium and should be used cautiously.
Pregnancy Use caution Food amounts are likely fine, but avoid concentrated supplements due to unpredictable iodine levels and limited safety data.
Breastfeeding Use caution Limited data; excess iodine can pass into breast milk, so avoid supplement doses and check with your doctor.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Fosfomycin

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Fosfomycin is filed under 2 classifications — antibiotic drugs, oral drugs. Dulse has documented interactions with 7 drug classes — the most serious being amiodarine (cordarone) (moderate), antithyroid drugs (moderate) and digoxin (lanoxin) (moderate) — and none of Fosfomycin’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

What Fosfomycin’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves Dulse. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Fosfomycin’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you take both. 4 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Low potassium Worth acting on
  • An irregular heartbeat Worth acting on
  • A low white blood cell count Worth acting on
  • An allergic reaction Worth acting on
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Nausea

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Fosfomycin. Read the label on DailyMed › Dulse’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Dulse side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Dulse has no side effects.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Fosfomycin page

“Fosfomycin (Monurol) is often given as a single sachet to knock out a bladder infection, so you get one chance to absorb the full dose, and that is exactly where this list deserves real care. The clearest hazard is activated charcoal, which binds medicines in the gut and can cut how much fosfomycin your body actually takes in.”

About Dulse

What is Dulse?

Dulse
  • Nutritional supplement (iodine, minerals)
  • Source of plant protein
  • General wellness
  • Anti-inflammatory support
  • Thyroid/iodine support

Dulse is a red seaweed eaten as a food in many coastal cultures and is a natural source of iodine, potassium, protein, and antioxidant compounds. As a food it is generally considered safe for most people, but concentrated supplements can deliver large amounts of iodine and potassium, so use caution. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it medicinally, especially if you have thyroid or kidney problems.

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Dulse is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Dulse record says about it on its own.

Dulse: dosing

There is no established standardized medicinal dose for dulse. As a food it is eaten in small amounts as flakes, snacks, or a recipe ingredient. If you use a dulse supplement, follow the directions on the product label and do not exceed the recommended amount.

About Fosfomycin

What Is Fosfomycin Used For?

Brand name: Monurol

Fosfomycin is an antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by specific bacteria. The right form depends on how serious the infection is.

Oral forms (Fosfomycin Tromethamine and Monurol) are approved only for uncomplicated UTIs — also called acute cystitis — in women 18 and older, caused by E. coli or Enterococcus faecalis. They are not for kidney infections or abscesses around the kidney. Contepo (intravenous) is approved for adults 18 and older with complicated UTIs, including acute pyelonephritis (kidney infection), caused by susceptible E. coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae.
