Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Sufentanil (Dsuvia) is a very strong opioid painkiller, and one of its main effects is slowing down the brain and the drive to breathe. The concern here is simple: elecampane may have its own mild sedative quality, so stacking it on top of a powerful opioid could, in theory, add to the drowsiness, dizziness, slowed breathing, or foggy thinking that sufentanil already causes.

I'll be honest, this interaction is theoretical. It comes from how these things work on paper, not from solid human studies, and elecampane's sedative punch is fairly gentle. Sufentanil itself, though, is no small thing, so I'd play it safe. Don't start or stop anything on your own. Just check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sufentanil Citrate page

“Anything sedating is the first hazard to understand with sufentanil citrate (Dsuvia), an opioid so potent that stacking another depressant on top can slow breathing, not just cause grogginess. Alcohol sits among the nine major-rated entries here, and those nine are worth learning before you look at the rest of the page.”
