English Ivy and Aspirin, Codeine Phosphate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Aspirin, Codeine Phosphate

Aspirin, Codeine Phosphate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group English Ivy interacts with.

Theoretically, English ivy might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that English ivy inhibits CYP2D6 enzymes. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the wrinkle with this combo: the codeine part of your medicine is a prodrug. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to turn codeine into morphine, which is what actually relieves your pain. English ivy, in lab tests, appears to block that same enzyme. So in theory it could mean less codeine gets converted to morphine, leaving you with weaker pain relief rather than stronger.

I want to be honest about how shaky this is. It's only been seen in a test tube, never in real people, so it may not matter at all with typical cough or cold products. The aspirin side isn't affected here. Still, if your pain control seems off, check with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

“Aspirin with codeine pairs a blood-thinning pain reliever with an opioid, and the 327 ingredients on this page reflect both halves, so this combination deserves genuine care before any supplement joins it. Most of the list, over 200 ingredients, can add to aspirin's effect on platelets and raise bleeding risk.”

About English Ivy

What is English Ivy?

English Ivy
  • Cough and chest congestion
  • Bronchitis
  • Asthma symptoms
  • Sore throat
  • Skin irritation

English ivy leaf extract is most commonly used in cough and cold syrups to help loosen mucus and ease coughing, and it is a popular ingredient in many European herbal products. Some research suggests it may help with certain coughs, but the evidence is still limited and mixed. The raw plant is poisonous if eaten and can irritate skin, so only use properly prepared commercial products and check with your pharmacist first.
