Deflazacort falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Eucalyptus interacts with.

Theoretically, eucalyptus might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eucalyptus oil might inhibit CYP3A4, although this has not been reported in humans.

Here's the connection worth knowing. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to activate and clear deflazacort. Lab studies hint that eucalyptus oil may slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, deflazacort could build up a bit higher than expected, which might mean more of the usual steroid side effects, things like fluid retention, mood or sleep changes, higher blood sugar, or stomach upset.

The big caveat: this is only seen in test-tube research, never confirmed in people, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven problem. Smelling eucalyptus in a vapor rub or lozenge is very unlikely to matter. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated eucalyptus products, and never swallow the oil.

What Is Deflazacort Used For?

Brand name: Emflaza

Deflazacort treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It is available under several brand names, each with slightly different age approvals.

Emflaza and Jaythari (both tablets and oral suspension) are approved for patients 2 years of age and older. Deflazacort tablets, Deflazacort oral suspension, Kymbee (tablet and oral suspension), and Pyquvi (oral suspension) are approved for patients 5 years of age and older.
