Rifampin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Eucalyptus interacts with.

Theoretically, eucalyptus might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that eucalyptus oil might inhibit CYP3A4, although this has not been reported in humans.

Here's the idea behind this pairing: eucalyptol, the main compound in eucalyptus oil, may block a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 in lab tests. Since rifampin is partly handled by that same enzyme, the theory is that eucalyptus could let a little more rifampin linger in your body. If that happened, you might notice more of rifampin's usual effects, like stomach upset, nausea, or its harmless but startling habit of turning urine, tears, and sweat orange-red.

That said, this is purely a test-tube finding that has never been shown in people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The whiff of a vapor rub or a lozenge is very different from swallowing concentrated oil, which is actually toxic and should never be taken by mouth. If you use eucalyptus regularly while on rifampin, just give your pharmacist or doctor a quick heads-up.

Eucalyptus is best known for its strong-smelling oil used in vapor rubs, inhalants, and lozenges to ease coughs and congestion. It may provide mild, short-term relief of cold symptoms, but the oil is toxic if swallowed and must never be taken by mouth undiluted. About Rifampin

What Is Rifampin Used For?

Brand names: Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifadin Injection, Rofactor

Rifampin treats all forms of tuberculosis (TB). It is almost always used in combination with other antibiotics — your doctor will build a multi-drug regimen tailored to your infection. Treatment usually runs for at least 6 months total.

Rifampin is also used to clear Neisseria meningitidis bacteria from the nose and throat in people who carry the germ without being sick themselves. It is not used to treat active meningococcal disease. The intravenous (IV) forms — Rifadin IV, Rifadin IV NOVAPLUS, and the injectable form of Rifampin — are specifically indicated when a patient cannot take the drug by mouth.
