Eucalyptus + Nifedipine
Nifedipine brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, and others.
Eucalyptus has a moderate interaction with Nifedipine. Theoretically, eucalyptus might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Nifedipine
Nifedipine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Eucalyptus interacts with.
In vitro research suggests that eucalyptus oil might inhibit CYP3A4, although this has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down nifedipine. Lab-dish studies hint that eucalyptus oil might slow that enzyme down a bit. If it did, nifedipine could hang around longer and act a little stronger than expected. With a blood pressure medicine like this, that might show up as more dizziness, lightheadedness, flushing, headache, swollen ankles, or a faster heartbeat.
I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's only based on test-tube research and has never actually been seen in people, so for most folks this is more theoretical than something to lose sleep over. Casual use of a vapor rub or lozenge is unlikely to matter. Still, if you plan to use eucalyptus regularly, give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up first.

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

Questions About Eucalyptus or Nifedipine
These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers Eucalyptus or Nifedipine, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nifedipine page
“Nifedipine (Procardia XL, Adalat) relaxes blood vessels to lower blood pressure and ease chest pain, and I would handle this list with real care, since 11 of its 273 entries carry a major rating. Grapefruit is the one to know cold.”

About Eucalyptus
What is Eucalyptus?
- Cough and chest congestion
- Colds and flu symptoms
- Stuffy nose
- Sore throat
- Minor muscle and joint aches
- Aromatherapy
Eucalyptus is best known for its strong-smelling oil used in vapor rubs, inhalants, and lozenges to ease coughs and congestion. It may provide mild, short-term relief of cold symptoms, but the oil is toxic if swallowed and must never be taken by mouth undiluted. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially in children, during pregnancy, or while breastfeeding.
About Nifedipine
What Is Nifedipine Used For?
Brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, Nifed, Procardia, Adalat XL, Adalat CC, Adalat LA, Adalat Retard, Adipine MR, Adipine XL, Cardilate MR, Coracten SR, Coracten XL, Fortipine LA 40, Hypolar Retard 20, Nifedipress MR, Nifopress Retard, Tensipine MR
Nifedipine treats vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by a spasm in a heart artery) and chronic stable angina (chest pain that comes on with effort). It can be used for chronic stable angina when other treatments, such as beta blockers or nitrates, haven't worked well enough or can't be tolerated.
Nifedipine extended-release tablets, including Procardia XL, are also used to treat high blood pressure. The nifedipine capsule label covers the angina uses only.

Nifedipine Is Linked to Lower Levels of 2 Nutrients
Natural Medicines records Nifedipine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Eucalyptus — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
