European Barberry + Clozapine
Clozapine brand names: Clozaril, Versacloz.
European Barberry has a moderate interaction with Clozapine. Theoretically, taking European barberry with anticholinergic drugs might cause additive effects.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Clozapine
Clozapine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group European Barberry interacts with.
In vitro evidence suggests that European barberry might have anticholinergic properties.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the situation with this pairing. Clozapine already has strong anticholinergic activity of its own, which is why it can cause things like dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and a racing heart. The concern with European barberry is that, in lab tests only, it has shown some anticholinergic-type effects too. So in theory, putting the two together could stack those effects and make clozapine's drying, constipating side effects feel a bit stronger.
I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is theoretical, based on test-tube findings, not real patient reports. It's not a reason to panic. But because clozapine's constipation can occasionally become serious, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding barberry.

“Clozapine (Clozaril, Versacloz) is usually the last-resort antipsychotic for schizophrenia, prescribed under close monitoring because small shifts in its blood level matter, so the 212 supplement interactions on file here deserve genuine care rather than a quick skim. Six are rated major.”

About European Barberry
What is European Barberry?
- Digestive upset
- Antimicrobial support
- Blood sugar support
- Cholesterol and metabolic support
- Skin conditions
European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Clozapine
What Is Clozapine Used For?
Brand names: Clozaril, Versacloz
Clozapine is used for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. That means severely ill people with schizophrenia who have not responded well enough to standard antipsychotic treatment. Because of its risks, it is meant only for those people.
It is also used to reduce the risk of repeated suicidal behavior in people with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who are judged to be at ongoing risk. This is supported for Clozaril tablets, Versacloz oral suspension, Clozapine orally disintegrating tablets and Clozapine tablets.

Clozapine Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Clozapine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with European Barberry — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
