Dalteparin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group European Barberry interacts with.

Theoretically, European barberry may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro and animal evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.

Dalteparin (Fragmin) is an injectable blood thinner that lowers your blood's ability to form clots. European barberry contains berberine, and in lab dishes and animal studies that compound seemed to make platelets (the tiny cells that help blood clot) stick together a little less. Put those two together and, in theory, you could be leaning on the bleeding side a bit harder than intended.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's based on test-tube and animal work, not real people, so it's a possible concern, not a proven one. Still, since dalteparin already raises bleeding risk, watch for things like easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or unusually dark stools. Before adding a concentrated barberry or berberine supplement, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Dalteparin Injection

What Is Dalteparin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Fragmin

Fragmin (dalteparin) injection is used to prevent blood clots (deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism) in patients having abdominal surgery, hip replacement surgery, or in medical patients who are severely immobile during a serious illness. It is also used to reduce the risk of dangerous complications from unstable angina and a type of heart attack called non-Q-wave myocardial infarction, given alongside aspirin.

Fragmin is also used for the extended treatment of symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE — blood clots in the veins or lungs) to prevent recurrence in adult cancer patients, and for the treatment of symptomatic VTE in children from birth (gestational age at least 35 weeks). Fragmin is not intended for the immediate (acute) treatment of VTE.
