Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Ethotoin
Ethotoin falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group European Barberry interacts with.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might have sedative effects. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Ethotoin (Paganone) is a seizure medicine in the hydantoin family, and like many of these drugs it can leave you feeling drowsy, foggy, or a little unsteady on its own. The concern here is pretty simple: animal studies hint that the berberine in European barberry may have a mild calming or sedative effect of its own. If that holds true in people, stacking it on top of ethotoin could add to that sleepiness or slowed reaction time.
I want to be honest that this is a theoretical worry, based on lab and animal research rather than real cases in patients. Barberry doesn't change how ethotoin is broken down, so this isn't about drug levels rising. Still, since extra grogginess can affect driving and daily safety, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ethotoin page
“Ethotoin (Paganone) is a seizure medicine, which raises the stakes for this list of 105 interacting supplements and herbal ingredients, seven of them rated major. Most of the page, 78 ingredients, layers extra sedation onto a drug that already slows the nervous system.”

About European Barberry
What is European Barberry?
- Digestive upset
- Antimicrobial support
- Blood sugar support
- Cholesterol and metabolic support
- Skin conditions
European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
