These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
European Barberry interacts with whole categories of medication. Flibanserin falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with European Barberry in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Flibanserin
Flibanserin falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group European Barberry interacts with.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might have sedative effects. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Addyi (flibanserin) and European barberry. Flibanserin already tends to make people drowsy, and it carries warnings about sleepiness, low blood pressure, and even fainting, especially if you take it during the day instead of at bedtime. Barberry contains berberine, and in animal studies berberine seemed to have a mild calming or sedating effect. The worry is simply that stacking two things that can make you sleepy could add up.
I'll be honest: this is a theoretical concern based on lab pharmacology, not strong human evidence, so I wouldn't panic. Still, if you ever feel extra groggy, lightheaded, or faint, that's worth mentioning. Before combining them, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Flibanserin also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
There is very preliminary evidence suggesting that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with Addyi (flibanserin): your body clears it mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. European barberry contains berberine, which lab work hints may slow that same enzyme down. If it does, flibanserin could linger longer and build up in your system, making its effects and side effects stronger.
For flibanserin, that could mean more dizziness, drowsiness, fainting, or very low blood pressure, which is why it already carries warnings about combining it with things that block CYP3A4. The honest caveat: this interaction is theoretical, based on early pharmacology rather than real patient cases. Still, since the consequences can include passing out, I'd check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two.

“Flibanserin (Addyi) is a nightly pill for low sexual desire in premenopausal women, and because it is sedating and can lower blood pressure, its supplement list deserves genuine care; nine of the 199 entries rate major, and those are the ones to learn first. About European Barberry
What is European Barberry?
- Digestive upset
- Antimicrobial support
- Blood sugar support
- Cholesterol and metabolic support
- Skin conditions
European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
