European Barberry and Insulin Aspart

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin Aspart

Insulin Aspart falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group European Barberry interacts with.

Theoretically, taking European barberry with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Preliminary clinical evidence suggests that European barberry juice reduces fasting glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes who are also taking antidiabetes drugs. Additionally, some animal studies show that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, has antiglycemic potential. Monitor blood glucose levels closely.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: insulin aspart already lowers your blood sugar, and European barberry (through its berberine) may nudge your sugar down a little further too. Stack the two and you could end up lower than you planned. That means a bigger chance of hypoglycemia, with things like shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, confusion, or feeling lightheaded.

Keep in mind this is mostly theoretical, supported by early, lower-quality studies, so it's a caution rather than a red alert. The barberry doesn't change how your body handles the insulin itself, it just adds its own glucose-lowering nudge. If you want to try it, check your blood sugar more often at first and talk with your pharmacist or doctor before adding or stopping anything.

“Every one of the 239 supplements listed for insulin aspart (Fiasp) touches the same thing the drug exists to manage, blood sugar, so this list warrants genuine care rather than a quick skim. Most entries add to insulin's glucose-lowering effect, raising the risk of hypoglycemia, and with a rapid-acting mealtime insulin a low can become…”

About European Barberry

What is European Barberry?

European Barberry
  • Digestive upset
  • Antimicrobial support
  • Blood sugar support
  • Cholesterol and metabolic support
  • Skin conditions

European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Insulin Aspart (rDNA Origin) Injection

What Is Insulin Aspart (rDNA Origin) Injection Used For?

Brand name: Fiasp

Insulin aspart products help improve blood sugar (glycemic) control in people with diabetes mellitus. The mixed product, Insulin Aspart Protamine and Insulin Aspart Mix 70/30 (NovoLog Mix 70/30), is labeled for adults.

The Mix 70/30 product is not recommended for diabetic ketoacidosis (a dangerous buildup of acids in the blood). Its fast- and long-acting parts are fixed, so they can’t be adjusted separately for basal (background) versus mealtime needs.
