European Barberry + Lepirudin
Lepirudin brand name: Refludan.
European Barberry has a moderate interaction with Lepirudin. Theoretically, European barberry may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Lepirudin
Lepirudin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group European Barberry interacts with.
In vitro and animal evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the situation with these two. Lepirudin is a powerful injectable blood thinner that works directly to stop clots, usually given in the hospital for people who can't take heparin. European barberry contains berberine, and in lab dishes and animal studies that compound seems to make platelets (the cells that help form clots) a little less sticky. So in theory, layering barberry on top of lepirudin could nudge your bleeding risk higher.
I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. This is a theoretical concern based on lab work, not proven cases in people. Still, since lepirudin is already a strong anticoagulant, watch for signs like easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or unusual fatigue, and please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

About European Barberry
What is European Barberry?
- Digestive upset
- Antimicrobial support
- Blood sugar support
- Cholesterol and metabolic support
- Skin conditions
European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
