Here's the simple version: Quinapril is a blood pressure medicine, and European barberry (and its active ingredient berberine) seems to have a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own. So if you take them together, the worry is that your pressure could dip a little too low. That might leave you feeling dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or unsteady when you stand up quickly.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This caution is theoretical, based mostly on lab and animal studies, so it's not a strong, proven interaction. It also leans more toward concentrated berberine supplements than a small culinary amount of barberry. Still, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it, especially if your pressure already runs low.

European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. What Is Quinapril Used For?

Brand names: Accupril, Accupro

Quinapril tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack. Quinapril may be used alone or combined with a thiazide diuretic (water pill) when one medication isn't enough.

Quinapril tablets are also used in the management of heart failure as an add-on therapy alongside other standard treatments such as diuretics and/or digitalis.
