Ritonavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group European Barberry interacts with.

Theoretically, European barberry might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
There is very preliminary evidence suggesting that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.

Here's the situation with European barberry and ritonavir (Norvir). Barberry contains berberine, which lab studies hint may block an enzyme in your body called CYP3A4. Ritonavir is partly cleared by that same enzyme, so in theory barberry could slow its breakdown and let levels creep up. Ritonavir is itself a strong CYP3A4 blocker, so adding a second blocker could mean more of the usual side effects, like nausea, diarrhea, an upset stomach, or tingling around the mouth.

I'll be honest though, this is very much a theory based on how these substances behave, not something proven in people. Still, HIV therapy is too important to risk guessing with. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't change your dose on your own.

Ritonavir (sold as Norvir and as generic ritonavir tablets) is used together with other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and children. It is never used alone — it must always be part of a combination regimen.

Norvir oral powder is specifically indicated for pediatric patients with HIV-1 infection. Norvir tablets and oral solution are approved for both adults and children older than one month.
