Fostamatinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Fennel interacts with.

Theoretically, fennel might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.

In vitro research suggests that fennel inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with Tavalisse (fostamatinib) and fennel. Once you swallow it, fostamatinib turns into its active form, called R406, and your body clears that mostly through a liver enzyme known as CYP3A4. Lab studies hint that fennel may slow this enzyme down. If that happened in the body, more of the active drug could linger, which might mean a higher chance of side effects like high blood pressure, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, or changes in liver tests.

The important part: this is only a test-tube finding and hasn't been shown in real people. Food and spice amounts of fennel are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated fennel supplements or the essential oil are where I'd be more cautious, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding them.

What Is Fostamatinib Used For?

Brand name: Tavalisse

Tavalisse (fostamatinib) is used to treat thrombocytopenia — dangerously low platelet counts — in adults with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). It is specifically for people whose platelet counts have not improved enough with at least one earlier ITP treatment.

The goal is to raise platelet counts high enough to reduce the risk of serious bleeding. If platelet counts do not respond sufficiently after 12 weeks, the medication is typically stopped.
