Dextromethorphan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Fennel interacts with.

Theoretically, fennel might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.

In vitro research suggests that fennel inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the simple version. Your body uses certain liver enzymes, including one called CYP3A4, to help clear dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant in products like Benylin and Theraflu strips). Lab studies hint that fennel may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, dextromethorphan could build up slightly and hang around longer, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, or that floaty, lightheaded feeling.

The important part: this has only been seen in a test tube, never in actual people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. A little fennel in your food is very unlikely to matter. If you're using concentrated fennel supplements or the essential oil along with cough medicine, just run it by your pharmacist first.

Dextromethorphan temporarily relieves cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation, such as the kind that comes with the common cold or breathing in irritants. It also helps reduce the urge to cough so you — or your child — can get to sleep.

Some products, including CVS Long Acting Cough and Premier Value Tussin Cough oral liquids, are also indicated to help loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions to help drain the airways.
