Niacin, Lovastatin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Fennel interacts with.

Theoretically, fennel might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.

In vitro research suggests that fennel inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Advicor is a combination of niacin and lovastatin. The part to watch here is lovastatin, which your body clears using an enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies hint that fennel may slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, more lovastatin could linger in your bloodstream, which can raise the small risk of muscle aches or, rarely, more serious muscle problems and liver irritation.

Here's the reassuring part: this is only test-tube research and has never been seen in actual people. Everyday fennel in your cooking is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated fennel capsules or the essential oil are a different story, so just run those by your pharmacist or doctor before starting them.
