Benzthiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Fo-ti interacts with.

Theoretically, fo-ti, particularly raw fo-ti root, might increase the risk of hypokalemia when taken with diuretic drugs.
Raw fo-ti root contains anthraquinone derivatives, which might have stimulant laxative effects and compound diuretic-induced potassium loss. In vitro research shows that fermented and processed fo-ti root have reduced laxative effects compared with raw fo-ti root.

Benzthiazide (Exna) is a thiazide-type water pill, and one of its well-known quirks is that it makes you lose potassium through your urine. That's worth keeping in mind here. Raw Fo-ti root contains anthraquinones, which can act like a stimulant laxative. Losing fluid through the bowel on top of the potassium your diuretic already pulls out could, in theory, push your potassium too low.

I'll be honest with you, this concern is based on how these substances work, not on solid human studies, so it's more of a 'keep an eye out' than an alarm. Low potassium can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, tiredness, or an irregular heartbeat. Processed or fermented Fo-ti seems to have less of that laxative effect than the raw root. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
