Fo-ti + Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, Naproxen Sodium
Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, Naproxen Sodium brand name: Aleve PM.
Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, Naproxen Sodium falls into 3 drug categories that Fo-ti can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, fo-ti might increase or decrease the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Fo-ti interacts with whole categories of medication. Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, Naproxen Sodium falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Fo-ti in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
1 of 3Why this applies to Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, Naproxen Sodium
Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, Naproxen Sodium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Fo-ti interacts with.
In vitro research suggests that fo-ti might inhibit CYP1A2. Additionally, in vitro research suggests that the degree of CYP1A2 inhibition depends on the type of fo-ti extract (i.e., the raw plant leads to greater inhibition than extensively processed extracts). However, in an animal study, an aqueous extract of fo-ti inhibited CYP1A2 while an alcoholic extract of fo-ti induced CYP1A2. Induction or inhibition of CYP1A2 by fo-ti has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Aleve PM combines naproxen (a pain and inflammation reliever) with diphenhydramine (a sedating antihistamine that helps you sleep). The concern here is that Fo-ti may affect a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, which helps process certain medicines. In theory, if Fo-ti slows that enzyme down, a bit more of the drug could linger, leaving you groggier, foggier, or dizzier the next morning, with more dry mouth from the diphenhydramine side.
Honestly, this is very theoretical. It comes only from lab and animal studies, and the effect even flipped depending on how the Fo-ti was prepared. Nothing like this has been shown in people. I'd still mention both to your pharmacist, especially since Fo-ti has been linked to liver issues and naproxen can be hard on the stomach.

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, Naproxen Sodium also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES.
Animal and in vitro research suggests that fo-ti may inhibit CYP2C9. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the situation with Aleve PM, which pairs naproxen (a pain and inflammation reliever) with diphenhydramine (a sedating antihistamine for sleep). The naproxen half is cleared partly by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. Lab and animal studies hint that fo-ti might slow that enzyme down, which could let naproxen build up a bit and act stronger than expected.
If that happened, you might notice more typical naproxen side effects like stomach upset, heartburn, or a higher chance of stomach irritation. I want to be honest though: this is theoretical, seen only in test tubes and animals, never confirmed in people. There's also a separate reason for care, since fo-ti has been tied to liver injury. Please run this combo by your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
3 of 3Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride, Naproxen Sodium also falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS.
Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), dipyridamole (Persantine), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the connection with Aleve PM, which combines naproxen (an NSAID pain reliever) with diphenhydramine (a sedating antihistamine for sleep). Naproxen already nudges up your bleeding risk on its own, because it makes platelets stickier and can irritate the stomach lining. Fo-ti's concern here is mostly about the liver. There are rare reports of Fo-ti causing liver injury, and a damaged liver makes fewer clotting factors, which can tip you toward easier bruising or bleeding.
This is anecdotal, based largely on one warfarin case, so it's a theoretical caution, not a sure thing. Still, if you take both, watch for stomach pain, black or bloody stools, unusual bruising, or yellowing of the eyes. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Fo-ti
What is Fo-ti?
- Anti-aging and longevity
- Hair graying and hair loss
- General tonic for vitality
- Constipation
- High cholesterol
Fo-ti (He Shou Wu) is a root used in traditional Chinese medicine, often promoted for healthy aging and hair. High-quality human evidence for these benefits is limited, and processed Fo-ti has been linked to reports of liver injury, so caution and professional guidance are important.
