Why this applies to Enoxaparin

Enoxaparin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Fo-ti interacts with.

Fo-ti has been linked to cases of acute liver failure which can decrease clotting factor production and increase the effects of anticoagulants. In one case, a patient who had been stable on warfarin presented with acute hepatitis and an INR elevated to 14.98. The patient had been taking fo-ti for 90 days prior to admission. Discontinuation of warfarin and fo-ti lead to a decrease in the INR and full recovery. Theoretically, concomitant use of fo-ti with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs may increase the risk of bleeding in some patients. Until more is known, monitor patients taking fo-ti and drugs that affect bleeding.
Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), dipyridamole (Persantine), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's the connection to keep in mind with Lovenox (enoxaparin). This isn't a typical enzyme tug-of-war. The worry is that Fo-ti has been tied, in rare reports, to liver injury. Your liver makes most of your clotting factors, so if it gets stressed, your blood may already be thinner than usual. Stack that on top of an injectable blood thinner like enoxaparin, and you could tip toward too much anticoagulation.

In real life that means watching for easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, dark or bloody stools, or unusual fatigue. To be fair, this is mostly anecdotal (one striking warfarin case), not strong proof. Still, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two so they can decide if monitoring or skipping the Fo-ti makes sense.

About Enoxaparin Injection

What Is Enoxaparin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Lovenox

Enoxaparin injection is used to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) — blood clots in the legs — in people having abdominal surgery, hip replacement surgery, or knee replacement surgery, and in hospitalized patients who are largely immobile due to acute illness. It is also used to treat acute DVT, with or without a pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs), both in the hospital and at home.

It is also used alongside aspirin to reduce dangerous complications of unstable angina and non-Q-wave heart attack, and to treat acute STEMI (a severe type of heart attack involving full blockage of a coronary artery) in patients who receive clot-dissolving therapy or undergo a procedure to open the blocked artery (PCI).
