Why this applies to Metoprolol

Metoprolol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Fo-ti interacts with.

Theoretically, fo-ti may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
Animal research suggests that fo-ti might inhibit CYP2D6. Additionally, an in vitro study suggests that the degree of CYP2D6 inhibition may depend on the type of fo-ti extract (i.e., the raw plant leads to greater inhibition than extensively processed extracts). However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body relies on an enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear metoprolol out of your system. Lab and animal studies hint that Fo-ti may slow that enzyme down. If it does, more metoprolol could linger in your blood, which might push its effects a little too far. That could show up as a slower heart rate, dizziness or lightheadedness (especially when you stand up), unusual tiredness, or blood pressure that drops more than expected.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This is only theoretical, based on cell and animal research, and it has never actually been reported in people. Raw Fo-ti seems to block the enzyme more than heavily processed extracts. Please don't change anything on your own. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before combining them.

What Is Metoprolol Used For?

Brand names: Lopressor, Toprol XL

Metoprolol is used to treat several heart and blood pressure conditions. Metoprolol succinate extended-release tablets (including Toprol-XL) are approved for high blood pressure, angina pectoris (chest pain from the heart), and heart failure. Metoprolol tartrate tablets (including Lopressor) are approved for high blood pressure, angina, and — when used alongside intravenous metoprolol — to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death after a definite or suspected heart attack.

Metoprolol tartrate injection (intravenous form) is used in hemodynamically stable patients with a definite or suspected acute heart attack to reduce cardiovascular death, and is followed by oral metoprolol therapy. Lowering blood pressure with metoprolol reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
