Progestin, Oral Contraceptive falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Fo-ti interacts with.

Theoretically, fo-ti might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research suggests that fo-ti might inhibit CYP3A4. One in vitro study suggests that the degree of CYP3A4 inhibition may depend on the type of fo-ti extract (i.e., the raw plant leads to greater inhibition than extensively processed extracts). However, this evidence conflicts with animal research suggesting that fo-ti does not inhibit CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

If you take a drospirenone progestin pill like Slynd for birth control, here's the gist. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down this hormone. Some early lab studies hint that Fo-ti might slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened, more of the progestin could linger in your body, which in theory could mean more of the usual side effects, things like spotting, breast tenderness, headaches, or nausea.

Here's the honest part though: this is only based on test-tube and animal work, the results even conflict with each other, and it has never actually been seen in real people. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Since Fo-ti has also been linked to liver concerns, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

  • Progestin-only (drospirenone) oral contraceptives are used to prevent pregnancy. Progestin is a female hormone. It works by preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries (ovulation) and changing the cervical mucus and the lining of the uterus. Progestin-only oral contraceptives are a very effective method of birth control, but they do not prevent the spread of of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome [AIDS]) and other sexually transmitted diseases.
