Concomitant use of GBL with ritonavir may potentiate adverse effects.
GBL is metabolized to gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB). Concomitant use of a small dose of GHB with the antiretroviral drugs ritonavir and saquinavir reportedly caused a near-fatal reaction, likely due to inhibition of GHB metabolism.

First, the big picture: GBL isn't a supplement at all. It's a toxic solvent that your body quickly turns into GHB, a strong sedative that's both illegal and dangerous on its own. So my honest advice is to steer clear of it entirely, and if you're struggling with sleep, anxiety, or substance use, please reach out to a doctor or pharmacist who can help safely.

Now, why Norvir (ritonavir) makes this even riskier: ritonavir is a powerful enzyme blocker. It can slow down how your body breaks down GHB, letting it build up to dangerous levels. There's a real, reported case where a small dose of GHB with ritonavir caused a near-fatal reaction, with deep sedation and trouble breathing. The evidence is limited (anecdotal), but the danger here is serious enough that I wouldn't take any chances. Please talk with your HIV care team before mixing anything new with your medication.

What Is Ritonavir Used For?

Brand name: Norvir

Ritonavir (brand name Norvir) is used together with other HIV medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and children older than one month of age. It is always taken as part of a combination regimen — never on its own.

Norvir oral powder is specifically indicated for pediatric patients with HIV-1 infection. Norvir tablets and oral solution are indicated for both adults and pediatric patients with HIV-1 infection. Ritonavir tablets (generic) are also indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretroviral agents.
