Why this applies to Anastrozole

Anastrozole falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the concern with pairing glucomannan and your anastrozole (Arimidex). Glucomannan is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your gut. Because of that gel, it can physically grab onto pills you swallow and slow down or reduce how much of them your body absorbs. The worry is that less anastrozole gets into your bloodstream, which could make it work a little less well at lowering your estrogen and controlling your breast cancer.

This is mostly a theoretical concern based on studies of other drugs (like glyburide), not anastrozole itself, so we can't be sure how big the effect is. Still, with a cancer medicine you don't want to take chances. A simple fix is timing: take your anastrozole first, then wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before your glucomannan. Please run this by your pharmacist or oncologist before combining them.

Glucomannan is a soluble fiber from the konjac root that swells into a gel in your stomach, which may help with mild weight loss, constipation, and modestly lowering cholesterol. It is generally well tolerated when taken with plenty of water, but it must be taken carefully because it can swell and cause choking or blockage if not swallowed properly. What Is Anastrozole Used For?

Brand name: Arimidex

Anastrozole (also sold as Arimidex) is used in postmenopausal women to treat hormone receptor-positive breast cancer at several stages. This includes early breast cancer after surgery (adjuvant therapy), locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer as a first treatment, and advanced breast cancer that has continued to grow after tamoxifen therapy.

For the second-line use in advanced breast cancer, women whose cancer did not respond to estrogen receptor (ER) testing or who did not respond to tamoxifen rarely benefited from anastrozole.
