Why this applies to Fosinopril

Fosinopril falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the simple version: glucomannan is a thick soluble fiber that swells into a gel in your gut. That gel can physically trap pills and slow or block how much of them your body actually absorbs. So the worry with Fosinopril isn't a liver enzyme issue, it's that the fiber may grab some of your blood pressure pill before it gets into your bloodstream.

If that happens, you could absorb a little less Fosinopril, which might make it work less well and leave your blood pressure higher than expected. The good news is this is easy to manage by spacing them apart. A practical habit is to take your Fosinopril first, then wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before your glucomannan, with plenty of water. Check timing with your pharmacist before mixing the two.

Fosinopril Sodium tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). They can be used alone or combined with a water pill (diuretic) when blood pressure needs more control.

Fosinopril Sodium tablets are also used as part of a treatment plan for heart failure, added on top of other standard therapies such as diuretics, with or without digitalis.
