Why this applies to Quetiapine

Quetiapine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the gist with quetiapine (Seroquel): glucomannan is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and the worry is that it can physically grab onto pills in your gut and slow or reduce how much medicine actually gets absorbed. Quetiapine isn't a prodrug, so this isn't about activating it. The concern is simply that you might absorb a little less of your dose if the two ride together.

For something that steadies mood, sleep, or thoughts, getting less than expected could mean it doesn't work as well as it should. The simple fix is timing: take your quetiapine first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your glucomannan. This is decent but not rock-solid evidence, so please run your routine by your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Quetiapine Used For?

Brand names: Seroquel, Dopaquel

Quetiapine treats schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults and certain age groups of children and adolescents. For bipolar disorder, it is approved for manic episodes (both as a stand-alone treatment and alongside lithium or divalproex) and for depressive episodes.

The extended-release form of quetiapine is also approved as add-on therapy for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults who are already taking an antidepressant. The regular tablet form is not approved for this use.
