Why this applies to Unoprostone

Unoprostone falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's some good news about this pairing. The concern with glucomannan is that its thick, gel-like fiber can slow or block the absorption of medicines you swallow by mouth. But unoprostone (Rescula) isn't a pill, it's an eye drop you place directly into the eye. Since it never travels through your stomach or intestines to work, glucomannan's bulking effect in your gut shouldn't lower how much of the drug reaches your eye or change how well it controls your eye pressure.

So in practical terms, this listed interaction really applies to oral tablets and capsules, not eye drops like yours. Still, it never hurts to mention your full medication and supplement list to your pharmacist or doctor so they can double-check everything for you.

  • Unoprostone ophthalmic is used to treat glaucoma (a condition in which increased pressure in the eye can lead to gradual loss of vision) and ocular hypertension (a condition which causes increased pressure in the eye). It is in a class of medications called prostaglandin analogs. Unoprostone lowers pressure in the eye by increasing the flow of natural eye fluids out of the eye.
