ACETAMINOPHEN (Tylenol, others)
Anecdotal reports suggest that adding glucosamine to an acetaminophen regimen might decrease pain control in patients with osteoarthritis. Some research suggests that the sulfate portion of glucosamine sulfate might contribute to its effect in osteoarthritis. Since acetaminophen metabolism requires sulfur and reduces serum sulfate concentrations, acetaminophen could theoretically interfere with the action of glucosamine sulfate. Conversely, the administration of sulfate could theoretically decrease the effectiveness of acetaminophen in sulfate-deficient people by increasing its clearance.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here is the gist with Migralam (which contains acetaminophen, caffeine, and isometheptene). The acetaminophen part is the piece that may bump into your glucosamine. Both rely on the body's pool of sulfate. Acetaminophen uses up sulfate when it is broken down, and glucosamine sulfate may need that sulfate to help your joints. So in theory they could each blunt the other a little, meaning slightly less joint relief from glucosamine, and possibly a touch less pain control for some folks.
That said, this is a minor, mostly theoretical interaction built on anecdotal reports, not strong trials. Most people can use both without trouble. If you notice your usual aches or migraines are not easing as well, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.
