Ciclesonide falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Greater Celandine interacts with.

Preliminary clinical research suggests that taking a specific semi-synthetic derivative of the greater celandine constituent chelidonine (Ukrain; not available in North America) might stimulate immune responses in cancer patients. Theoretically, taking greater celandine might decrease the effects of immunosuppressive therapy. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).

Here's the gist: ciclesonide (Alvesco, Omnaris) is an inhaled or nasal corticosteroid, and one of the ways steroids like this work is by calming down an overactive immune response in your airways. Greater celandine, on the other hand, has been studied (mostly through a lab-made derivative not even sold here) for possibly stimulating the immune system. So in theory, the herb could tug in the opposite direction and slightly blunt how well ciclesonide settles your inflammation.

I want to be honest, though: this concern is theoretical, based on how things work on paper rather than real cases with inhaled steroids. Inhaled ciclesonide also acts mostly right in the lungs, so a body-wide effect is less likely. My bigger worry is that greater celandine has been linked to serious liver injury. I'd skip it and check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

What Is Ciclesonide Oral Inhalation Used For?

Brand names: Omnaris, Alvesco, Zetonna

Alvesco (ciclesonide) inhaler is approved for the maintenance treatment of asthma as a preventive therapy in adults and children 12 years of age and older. It is taken regularly to reduce airway inflammation and help prevent asthma symptoms — not to relieve a sudden attack.

Alvesco is not a rescue inhaler and should not be used to treat sudden wheezing or acute asthma episodes. It is also not approved for children under 12.
