Why this applies to Fluphenazine

Fluphenazine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Greater Celandine interacts with.

Research in vitro shows that chelidonine, a constituent of greater celandine, inhibits cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) enzyme activity. Theoretically, greater celandine might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
Some drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and many others.

Here's the gist of it. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help break down and clear fluphenazine. Greater celandine contains a compound called chelidonine that, at least in lab dish studies, can slow that enzyme down. If the enzyme works slower, fluphenazine could build up more than expected in your system.

Higher levels could mean stronger side effects from this antipsychotic, things like deep drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure, or muscle stiffness and restlessness (the movement-related effects this drug class is known for). That said, this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube work, not real patients, so I wouldn't panic. Honestly, the bigger worry with greater celandine is its link to serious liver injury. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Fluphenazine Used For?

Brand names: Prolixin, Permitil, Fluphenazine

Fluphenazine hydrochloride tablets and oral solution are indicated for the management of psychotic disorders. Fluphenazine Hydrochloride Injection is also used for psychotic disorders and can bridge patients to oral therapy.

Fluphenazine Decanoate Injection is a long-acting form specifically intended for patients who need extended antipsychotic treatment — for example, those with chronic schizophrenia who benefit from a single injection that can last up to four weeks or longer. It is not approved for behavioral problems related to intellectual disability, and it is not approved for dementia-related psychosis in elderly patients.
