Thalidomide falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Greater Celandine interacts with.

Preliminary clinical research suggests that taking a specific semi-synthetic derivative of the greater celandine constituent chelidonine (Ukrain; not available in North America) might stimulate immune responses in cancer patients. Theoretically, taking greater celandine might decrease the effects of immunosuppressive therapy. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).

Here's the thinking on combining greater celandine with thalidomide. Thalidomide works partly by calming overactive immune signals, which is how it helps with the skin sores and nerve symptoms of leprosy (ENL) and how it supports treatment in multiple myeloma. Greater celandine, on the other hand, may nudge the immune system in the opposite direction (stimulating it). So in theory, the herb could work against what thalidomide is trying to do, possibly making it less effective.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not strong human proof. But there's a bigger issue: greater celandine has been tied to serious liver injury, so most experts advise against taking it at all. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

About Thalidomide

What Is Thalidomide Used For?

Brand name: Thalomid

Thalomid (thalidomide capsules) is approved for two uses. First, it is used in combination with dexamethasone to treat newly diagnosed multiple myeloma — a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow.

Second, Thalomid is used on its own to treat the skin symptoms of moderate to severe erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), a painful inflammatory reaction that can occur in people with leprosy. It can also be used as ongoing maintenance therapy to prevent ENL from coming back. Note: Thalomid is not approved as the sole treatment for ENL when moderate to severe nerve inflammation (neuritis) is also present.
