Here's the thing to keep in mind with Deferasirox (Exjade, Jadenu). Guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when you take it close to your medicine, it can grab onto the drug in your gut and slow or lower how much of it actually gets absorbed. Deferasirox isn't a prodrug, so less absorption simply means less of the medicine working to pull excess iron out of your body.

Why that matters: if your deferasirox isn't fully absorbed, your iron levels may not come down the way they should, which is the whole point of the medication. To stay safe, separate them by taking guar gum about 30 to 60 minutes after your deferasirox dose, and run this timing past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Guar gum is a soluble, gel-forming fiber from the guar bean that may modestly help with cholesterol, blood sugar, and bowel regularity. It is generally safe in food amounts, but concentrated supplements can cause gas, bloating, and a risk of throat or gut blockage if not taken with enough water. Always take it with plenty of fluid and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Deferasirox

What Is Deferasirox Used For?

Brand names: Exjade, Jadenu

Deferasirox — available as tablets (film-coated and for oral suspension) and as oral granules, and sold under brand names including Exjade (tablet for oral suspension) and Jadenu (film-coated tablet and granules) — is used to remove excess iron that builds up in the body. All formulations are approved to treat chronic iron overload due to blood transfusions in patients 2 years of age and older.

All formulations are also approved for chronic iron overload in non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia (NTDT) syndromes in patients 10 years of age and older, but only when liver iron levels and serum ferritin meet specific thresholds. Using deferasirox together with other iron-chelation medicines has not been shown to be safe or effective.
