Here's the simple version: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when you take it close to a pill, it can grab onto that pill and slow or lower how much actually gets absorbed. With Fostamatinib (Tavalisse), that could mean less of the drug reaches your bloodstream, and a weaker effect on keeping your platelets up. For a medicine you're relying on to prevent bruising and bleeding, you don't want it working at half-strength.

This is a fairly general fiber-and-pill effect rather than something proven specifically for Fostamatinib, so don't panic. An easy fix is timing: take your Fostamatinib first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the guar gum. Run the spacing past your pharmacist or doctor to be safe.

What Is Fostamatinib Used For?

Brand name: Tavalisse

Tavalisse (fostamatinib) is used to treat thrombocytopenia — dangerously low platelet counts — in adults with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). It is specifically for people whose platelet counts have not improved enough with at least one earlier ITP treatment.

The goal is to raise platelet counts high enough to reduce the risk of serious bleeding. If platelet counts do not respond sufficiently after 12 weeks, the medication is typically stopped.
