Here's the gist: guar gum forms a thick gel in your stomach that can slow down or trap some medicines, so less of the drug gets absorbed. With Horizant (gabapentin enacarbil), that could mean a bit less medicine reaching your bloodstream and a weaker effect, which for restless legs syndrome might show up as the leg discomfort or nighttime urge to move not being controlled as well.

The good news is this is a timing problem, not a reason to avoid either one. A simple fix is to take your Horizant first and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum. Food-sized amounts of fiber are unlikely to matter much; concentrated supplement doses are the bigger concern. Run the schedule by your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Gabapentin

What Is Gabapentin Used For?

Brand name: Horizant

Gabapentin (brands include Neurontin, Relgaabi, Gabarone, Gralise, and Horizant) is primarily used to manage postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) — the nerve pain that lingers after a shingles outbreak — in adults. Neurontin, Relgaabi, Gabarone, and gabapentin capsules, tablets, and oral solution are also used as add-on therapy for partial onset seizures (a type of epilepsy) in adults and children aged 3 and older.

Horizant (gabapentin enacarbil extended-release tablet) has two specific approvals: treatment of moderate-to-severe primary restless legs syndrome (RLS) in adults, and management of postherpetic neuralgia in adults. Horizant is not recommended for people who need to sleep during the day and stay awake at night. Gralise is approved only for postherpetic neuralgia and cannot be substituted for other gabapentin products due to its different release profile.
