Here's the practical concern with Ninlaro (ixazomib). Guar gum forms a thick gel in your stomach and gut that can grab onto pills and slow or block how much medicine actually gets absorbed. Since ixazomib is a capsule you swallow, this gel could mean less of it reaches your bloodstream. It is not a prodrug, so less absorption simply means a weaker dose getting in, which could make your myeloma treatment less effective over time.

This is a real but modest concern, mostly shown with other oral drugs like metformin. To stay safe, a good rule is to space them out: take your guar gum a half hour to an hour after your ixazomib, and please run this by your oncology team or pharmacist before adding any fiber supplement.

What Is Ixazomib Used For?

Brand name: Ninlaro

Ninlaro (ixazomib) is used to treat multiple myeloma — a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow. It is always used together with two other medicines, lenalidomide and dexamethasone, and is approved for adults who have already tried at least one other treatment.

Ninlaro is not recommended as maintenance therapy or for newly diagnosed multiple myeloma in combination with lenalidomide and dexamethasone outside of controlled clinical trials.
