Here's the gist with Caplyta (lumateperone) and guar gum. Because guar gum forms a thick gel in your gut, it can grab onto pills and slow or lessen how much of them your body actually soaks up. We've seen this happen with drugs like metformin and penicillin. The concern is that taking them too close together could mean less lumateperone gets into your bloodstream, which may make it work less well for your schizophrenia symptoms.

The simple fix is timing. A good rule is to take your guar gum about 30 to 60 minutes after your lumateperone, with plenty of water. Food amounts of guar gum likely won't matter much, but concentrated fiber supplements are worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Lumateperone Used For?

Brand name: Caplyta

Caplyta (lumateperone) is approved for adults with schizophrenia, depressive episodes associated with bipolar I or II disorder (bipolar depression), and as an add-on treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD).

For bipolar depression, Caplyta can be used on its own or alongside lithium or valproate. For MDD, Caplyta is used together with an antidepressant — not on its own as a standalone antidepressant.
